Some handy tips to ensure that you keep your alcohol calories in check:

  • Make your drinks last longer by adding soda to wine and diet lemonade to lager/beer
  • Try spirits with low-calorie mixers. Less calories
  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with water to prevent a hangover. It’s a good way to avoid overdoing it and to stay hydrated, while also reducing your calorie intake
  • Add ice to your drink to make it look like more than it is and eventually to dilute the drink to make it go further
  • Avoid creamy cocktails that are high in calories and fat
  • Make your first drink a water so you’re not using an alcoholic drink to quench your thirst
  • Drink through a straw, it will slow you down and allow you to enjoy the taste
  • Beware of “free pour” measures as it’s hard to keep track of what you’re having
  • Watch out for local beers that can often be higher in calories
  • Choose your drinks carefully, here are a few suggested swaps you could make:
    • Large Pinot Grigio (190kcal) compared to a glass of champagne (95kcal)
    • Vodka and cranberry juice (190kcal) compared to a Vodka soda with fresh lime (76kcal)
    • Large gin and tonic (180kcal) compared to a single Gin and slimline tonic (120kcal)
    • Pint of cider (233kcal) compared to a bottle of Becks (135kcal)
    • Vodka/Bacardi/JD and coke (120-129kcal) compared to a Vodka/Bacardi/JD and diet coke (56-65kcal)
